Upcoming Change in Regulations: Important Information for Pool Owners

Federal regulations for pool pumps will be officially changed effective July 2021, and it’s important for all current and new pool owners to be aware of what this means. This new law is for a change from single-speed pumps to variable-speed pumps on all new and replacement inground pool filter pumps.

Why Is There a Change to Variable-Speed Pumps?

Pool pumps typically operate at high speeds for a few hours daily to provide a high flow rate for mixing and cleaning. However, most of the time, they just need to circulate the water through the filtration systems which can be done at lower flow rates. These variable-speed pumps can reduce energy use by up to 70%, as opposed to their single-speed counterparts since they can operate at lower speeds for several hours.

Other than saving energy, they can also reduce the noise level, improve the effectiveness of the filtration system, and even extend the life of other pool equipment. All these will eventually lead to large savings for pool owners.

What Does This Mean?

According to the mandate by the Department of Energy, the replacement of single-speed pumps by the more efficient variable-speed pumps is a part of the new minimum efficiency standards put in place for homes and businesses throughout the United States. This is coming after years of input from all the necessary parties including manufacturers, trade associations, utility corporations, and consumer groups.

It was determined that these variable-speed pumps will meet the new performance standards that require self-priming filtration pumps to work past a certain horsepower threshold. Essentially, all pumps over 1.0 Total Horsepower (THP) must be variable-speed pumps.

The law will have taken full effect by July 19, 2021.

How Are Pool Owners Affected?

You don’t have to worry about changing your single-speed pumps for now. The new law hasn’t taken effect yet and even when it does in 2021, you’re still not mandated to change to a variable-speed pump unless your old one requires a replacement or you’re wanting to install a new one.
